grandmothersmusings Sitting here at my computer, I can look up at the clouds & watch them scurrying across the sky. Once in awhile, Ill see an open space & then because there is a fast current of air moving them along, the gap between them narrows as a cloud hurries to catch the next cloud.

Memorial Day is to some a day to relax & have fun, but It should also be a day to stop & think about all of those who died in the service of their country & to honor their memory.

As a child, the day used to be called Decoration day. Mama would take us to the cemetary where we would put flowers on the graves of our family members who had passed away. It was established however as a day to remember our veterans & the sacrifice they had made for our freedom. The first time I ever attended a military service, was when I was 7 years old. It was for my uncle who had served in the first world war, so it must have been around 1934. Though he had come through the war, he was dead at a fairly young age, leaving behind a wife & 3 children. We were at the cemetary, where taps resounded & I believe that was when the Honorary rifles fired their salute to their fallen comrade. I still am effected by the sound when I hear it given for someone at their service.

Having live through the turbulent times of WW 2, where footage was always shown in theaters with the news a part of the theater's offering along with the movie, a cartoon or two & the main attraction, & possibly a second feature & the future attraction. Radio & these newsreals were our source of the progression of the war. Now of course we see things "live' on television.

There was such jubilation when VJ day occured & the war was officially ended. It wasn't too long after that two other wars, the Korean, & the war in Vietnam were in progress. Additional wars, the Gulf war & the war in Iraq have added more soldiers to be remembered for their sacrifice.

I hope that we, as Americans will never forget the sacrifice these men who died in the service of our country for our freedom. Our wonderful heros, these, many of them so very young, who gave their all for what they believed in.

I hope everyone will stop for a moment to give them a silent moment of thanks for what they did.

grandmothersmusings May is speeding by. It seems that the days go so quickly & it is hard to believe that today was my little grandadaughters last day of preschool. Our weather has been rather weird for spring. We had a few really warm days & then lately it has been cold & rainy. My Alergies turned into a Sinus infection & I'm on my second antibiotic, a different kind this time, trying to get over it. I wonder why such beauty that we have in nature in the spring, comes with pollin that causes such problems. Even the rain we have had, hasn't seemed to help.
A quick glance at my watch tells me thtat it is time for antibiotic number 3, & I can only hope that the little capsuls will begin to work their magic, especially since my doctor & her nurse will be off the month of June for a much needed vacation.
June sometimes is a capricious month. My first arrival on the west coast was in June in the 1950s. I couldn't believe how cold the weather was in Los Angeles that year. I thought to myself, "This can't be the sunny California I've always heard about" Fortunately the weather did get better & I decided to stay. I had come from back east in Ohio to be my sister's bridesmaid, & my older brother was also living in the area with my neice & nephew. Later our mom moved out to join the family. It was good to get away from the really cold & snowy Ohio winters.
The next year in 1957, I met my husband, but thats another story

grandmothersmusings
Well today is Mother's day. I had the opportunity to celebrate early when my daughter came Friday & brought my 2 little granddaughters with her to spend the night. She brought with her a beautiful framed grouping of 3 pictures, The top one was of myself & granddaughter number 2 when she was a baby. The middle picture was of her & I whan she was a baby & the bottom one is of myself & the oldest grandaughter. It was decorated on the sides with appropriate stickers as one does in a Scrapbook. I really treasure it.
The girls were excited to spend the night since this was the first time for them to do so, since their mommy usually comes down by herself if she is spending the night, unless they come & go back the same day.
There are many elements involved in being a good mother. It is important to have a support system & in some cases, there are moms who don't have that. Moms need "me time" I have a wonderful son-in-law who does that by taking the girls places such as the store & taking care of them if she is gone. The reason moms need some "me' time is because in order to give our best as moms, we need that time to refresh ourselves. One cannot continue to give out to others, their children & their spouse without that much needed time for themselves.
Mothers ought to be honored year around for all they contribute & not thought of on just one day.
Moms & dads need to look to the Lord for His guidance & help to raise their children & I'm thankful my "kids" do that for their children.

grandmothersmusings About me

After reading my daughters blog, I decided I would like to try this for myself. I am a 79 year old grandmother who takes delight in her daughter & wonderful son in law & my two terrific grandaughters.
The picture of course is teenage me, that I had taken as a gift fo my mom.
At present I am living around a hours drive from my kids & grandkids which I'm hoping to remedy soon, by moving to their area.
I'm an avid reade & especially like Christian fiction. I also like to write both poems, (If I'm inspired to do so for some specal occasion ) & short stories.
After being married for 30 almost 31 years, I became a widow in 1988. Although in some ways it will be difficult to leave my home which we both planned & built for ourselves, living closer to my special kids & grandkids will more than make up for it.
A house is a house, but a home is where your heart is & mine is an hours drive away.
I have been truly blessed by the Lord & want always to serve Him in some capacity. I love to encourage people & I hope in some small way through my life, people will see Jesus
